Importing a vehicle does not have to feel complicated. Most uncertainty comes from not knowing the payment stages, documents and sequence of events. A well-managed import follows a clear process.
1. Secure the booking and begin sourcing
The journey starts with your preferred model, grade, colour, manufacturing year, specifications and target budget. Once those requirements are confirmed, an initial estimate can be prepared and an advance payment used to secure the booking.
The vehicle may be sourced through a Japanese live auction or from trusted dealer stock. A dedicated support channel can keep sales, finance, operations and management aligned with the customer during the process.
2. Open the Letter of Credit
Once the vehicle is confirmed, a proforma invoice is issued. This becomes the banking basis for opening the Letter of Credit (LC). For Japan, the LC is typically denominated in JPY; for the UK, Thailand, Australia and India, the source document may be denominated in USD.
The bank may place a hold for around 100%–110% of the LC value depending on the customer's banking relationship. The funds are not necessarily deducted immediately when the LC is opened.
3. Complete the balance payment
The customer settles the agreed balance amount, applicable charges and service fee. After purchase, yard photos and inspection progress can be shared so the vehicle's condition and movement remain visible.
4. Pay customs duties and taxes
When the vehicle arrives in Sri Lanka, the applicable government taxes and customs duties must be settled. The amount is not based on one simple percentage; classification, engine capacity, fuel type, tax thresholds and exchange rates can all affect the outcome.
5. Pay port charges and release the vehicle
After customs duty and harbour charges are settled, the clearing process can be completed. Customers may collect the vehicle at the port or arrange delivery to a preferred location.
